Australian Physiotherapy Association Education Evening

July 2016 This month, James presented to the Australian Physiotherapy Association on the importance of targeted and timely physiotherapy. Therapy plays an integral part of achieving optimal post-operative outcomes; and forming a trusting relationship with a local therapist is important in achieving these goals.

Radiology SA GP Education Evening

August 2016 This month, James was pleased to co-host an education evening on wrist problems at Radiology SA. The evening was a tremendous success. November 2016 This month, James attended a MIGA-sponsored event on improving patient outcomes. The event was aimed at improving doctor-patient interactions in an effort to optimize surgical outcomes.

Royal North Shore Symposium

November 2016 This month, James met with other shoulder surgeons from around Australasia at the Royal North Shore Shoulder Symposium on Advanced Shoulder Arthroscopy. This biannual event is an excellent opportunity for Surgeons to meet and discuss current trends in shoulder surgery.

South Australian Hand Surgery Society (SAHSS) Annual Meeting

December 2015 This month, James attended the SAHSS Annual Meeting. This was an excellent opportunity for local Hand Therapists and Hand Surgeons to meet and discuss current trends in hand and wrist surgery. James Visits Prominent Shoulder & Reconstructive

January 2016 This month, James visited Dr Edward Bateman, a prominent shoulder & reconstructive surgeon on The Sunshine Coast, NSW. James spent 2 days operating with Dr Bateman and took the opportunity to discuss Dr Bateman’s research database and current research projects. Dr Bateman has recently published an innovative paper on reconstruction of massive glenoid defects in total shoulder joint replacements. To find out more – Click Here.

Minimally-Invasive Surgery Article Published in Surgical Techniques Journal

August 2015 This month, James published an article on a muscle-sparing surgical technique that he developed and has been using for several years. The technique preserves important forearm muscles and can be used by other surgeons when managing radius bone fractures. The novel technique has been published in “Techniques in Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery” and includes an instructional video. To find out more, Click Here.

Dr Steve Coleman Discusses Current Trends in Dupuytren’s Hand Contracture Treatment

October 2015 This month, James joined other surgeons to discuss the latest developments in the treatment of Dupuytren’s contracture of the hand. Dr Steve Coleman presented his experience with a new collagenase enzyme treatment (xiaflex), that has recently become available for the treatment of Dupuytren’s patients. Dr Coleman is a Brisbane-based surgeon who was involved in the early trails of xiaflex – which is now available in Australia for use. To find out more about xiaflex To find out more, Click Here.

James updates other surgeons on shoulder SLAP lesions

June 2015 Superior labral tear from anterior to posterior (SLAP) are a common cause of recurrent shoulder pain in young, active individuals. These lesions have come into public awareness because of their frequency in athletes involved in overhead (throwing) activities. Although 10 varieties of SLAP lesion have been described on MRI or MR arthrography, 4 clinical types are generally described. This month, James presented to other orthopaedic surgeons on the current trends in management of SLAP lesions.

Research Paper Presented at the Canadian Orthopaedic Association Annual Scientific Meeting

June 2015 The Canadian Orthopaedic Association (COA) represents Orthopaedic Surgeons accross Canada. In addition to it's representative role, the COA undertakes major activities that include: Continuing Medical Education; the organization of orthopaedic training across Canada; and collaborating with the Royal College on issues involving orthopaedic surgeons. This month, the COA Annual Scientific Meeting was held in Vancouver, Canada. At this international meeting, James presented research on acute varus posteromedial rotatory instability (VPMRI) of the elbow. This is a rare condition that may lead to devastating outcomes if missed or maltreated. To read more about VPMRI – click here.

University of Adelaide Medical Students start Research Elective with Dr McLean & Dr Mandziak

March, 2015 This month, two University of Adelaide Medical Students began their 6-week research electives under the supervision of Dr McLean and Dr Mandziak. The aim of this study is to assess whether Clinical Hip Scores are equivalent in normal, healthy, pathology-free individuals of different ethnicity, nationality, sex and age. The purpose of this study is to establish normal population values for Clinical Hip Scoresusing an Outcomes-Based Electronic Research Data collection system (www.oberd.com). Ultimately, this research will be published in an orthopaedic journal and used for future research initiatives.

James gives Clinical Update Presentation on Tennis Elbow

February, 2015 Tennis elbow (also known as lateral epicondylitis) is an extremely common elbow disorder that can cause significant pain and dysfunction for patients. The treatment of the disorder remains controversial. Several papers have been written recently discussing the many and varied treatment options and their reported success rates.
