USA Shoulder Visitation to Assess New Shoulder Innovations

In October, Dr McLean visited Dr Patrick Denard at his Surgical Centre in Oregon, USA. Dr Denard is an internationally-renowned shoulder surgeon, who is involved with the innovation and development of new shoulder anchors used in the management of shoulder rotator cuff tendon disease; as well as a new shoulder replacement system.

These cutting edge systems are not yet available in Australia, but will hopefully be released in early 2020.

Dean’s Commendation for PhD Thesis

This month, Dr James McLean accepted a Dean’s Commendation for his PhD Thesis investigating patient assessments using interactive iPad technology.

His thesis has involved the establishment of an electronic database of surgical outcomes for Australian patients undergoing arthroplasty (joint replacement) surgery. This research is being used to augment the data collected by the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry (AOANJRR), an initiative created to improve and maintain the quality of care for individuals receiving joint replacement surgery.

In addition to his research, Dr McLean is also leading the way in modern orthopaedic surgical management, adopting technical advances in his operating theatre and in general patient care to help recovery times and outcomes following surgery.

Nice Shoulder Conference 2018

This month, James joined other sub-specialised orthopaedic shoulder surgeons from all over the world at the Nice Shoulder Course. This course is one of the largest, multi-national shoulder meetings in the world and is held every 2 years. It provides the opportunity for surgeons to meet and discuss interesting cases, cutting edge techniques and surgical advances. The meeting combines lectures, case discussions, surgical workshops, cadaveric workshops and live surgical demonstrations. The course aims to keep surgeons up-to-date and enable them to learn new skills. To find out more about the Nice Shoulder Course – Visit their website, or watch the promo video. Advanced Training For Sub-specialised Shoulder Surgeons

Since there are often only a few sub-specialised shoulder surgeons in practice per city (or even per country in some cases), surgeons often have to travel internationally to keep up-to-date with advances in surgical techniques and equipment. Meetings that include live surgical demonstrations are one way that surgeons remain up-to-date and learn new skills. Surgeries are performed in a normal operating theatre where audiovisual equipment is used to project the operation live to a lecture theatre. In this way, hundreds of interested surgeons can watch a single surgery at one time, without having to crowd into a small operating theatre and risk decontamination of the sterile operating field.
