A thumb fracture is a break in either of the two bones which make up the thumb. It can affect your ability to grasp items, ad can increase your risk of developing arthritis later in life. Most severe thumb fractures occur near the joint, and are caused by a direct fall to the outstretched hand.

Conservative treatment of thumb fractures (through immobilisation) is often possible, but larger or complicated fractures which involve damage to surrounding structures (like nerves, tendons, or blood vessels) may require surgery to repair.
